
JOSEPHINE VIRGILIO

Josephine Virgilio stands as a beacon of excellence in the realm of education, her life's narrative weaving a tapestry of dedication, innovation, and unwavering commitment to the betterment of young minds. Born into humble beginnings, Ms. Virgilio's journey is a testament to the transformative power of education in shaping destinies.
Growing up in a modest neighborhood, Josephine was imbued with the values of hard work and resilience from an early age. These foundational principles would serve as guiding lights throughout her illustrious career. With an insatiable thirst for knowledge and a passion for teaching, Ms. Virgilio pursued higher education, earning degrees in Education and Law. She also earned her Principal's certification Part 1 and Part 2 along with her SOQP (Supervisory Officer Qualifications), as well as, a Master's in Education and doctoral studies.
Armed with academic prowess and a heart brimming with compassion, Ms. Virgilio embarked on her teaching journey with boundless enthusiasm. Her career took root in underprivileged communities, where she witnessed firsthand the transformative impact education could have on disadvantaged youths. Fuelled by a fervent desire to level the playing field, Josephine dedicated herself to nurturing the potential of every student who crossed her path.
In her role as an educator, Josephine's pedagogical approach transcended conventional boundaries. She eschewed rote memorization in favor of interactive, experiential learning methods that ignited curiosity and fostered critical thinking (e.g. STEM- Science, Technology, Education , Mathematics). Her classroom became a vibrant crucible of ideas, where students were not merely recipients of knowledge but active participants in their own learning journey.
Beyond the confines of the classroom, Josephine's influence reverberated throughout the educational landscape. Recognizing the need for systemic change, she spearheaded initiatives aimed at reforming curricula and enhancing teacher training programs. Her advocacy for inclusive education and equal opportunities for all earned her widespread acclaim and cemented her legacy as a trailblazer in the field.
Ms. Virgilio's impact extended far beyond the realm of academia. She continues to mentor teachers, is a confidante, and a beacon of hope for countless individuals whose lives she continues to touch in education. Her unwavering belief in the inherent potential of every student, regardless of background or circumstance, inspired generations of learners to reach for the stars
For example, in 2010 -2025 Ms Virgilio created the H.A.P. (Homework Assistance Program with Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB). The H.A. P. program consists of high school students supporting elementary students with study skills and homework. This initiative received an $11,000 grant from the TLLP (Teaching Leading Leadership Program) through the Ontario Ministry of Education and a $2,500 grant from the Innovative Exemplary Teacher's Award with the Toronto Catholic District School Board.
From 2020 to 2022, Ms. Virgilio developed the Fresh Food Market (FFM) enabling students to gain financial literacy by managing a mini-mart grocery store. They learned about various aspects of the business, from produce sourcing to daily operations. This program received a $2,500 Innovative Teacher Exemplary award and a $10,000 grant the PC President's Choice Charity. In 2023-2024, she also created and implemented the Health Action Technology (H.A.T.) program, where choreographed fitness routines to promote cardiovascular health using the latest technology. This initiative earned a $750 Innovative Exemplary award from TCDSB and $20,000.00 through the Kids' Powerful Program.
For the 2024 -2025 school year, Ms. Virgilio and her students launched the Gourmet Globetrotters program, focusing on nutrition and healthy eating. Students researched global recipies, exploring cultural and historical significance of different foods around the globe. We also created a Google classroom that documented our cooking journey. We have successfully videotaped 18 different episodes with 18 different recipies around the globe. This project earned $15, 000.00 from the PC Charity grant an application that was submitted by Ms. Virgilio. Ms. Virgilios legacy continues to inspire educators around the world (Mr. Nicholas Ferroni, New Jersey/ Mr. Gavin McCormack, Australia) and her unwavering dedication and commitment to education is truly inspiring.
